About us

LAOHA - Latin American Oral Health Association was established in Brazil in May, 2015, as a result of a successful partnership between Colgate-Palmolive and renowned professors from two prestigious educational institutions, University of São Paulo (USP) and Guarulhos University (UNG). Since then, both universities and affiliated ones have contributed towards technical and/or scientific development of LAOHA.

We are a non-profit, philanthropic, research-driven, and an evidence-based practice institution.

We aim to pursue educational and scientific state-of-the-art research by training, at a doctoral level, dentistry graduates from Latin America and other countries. LAOHA gives support to those highly motivated professionals who are noted for their excellence and leadership but, due to geographical and / or financial reasons, are not able to broaden their studies in their own regions.

We are committed to providing fully engaged professionals with training programs in oral health science so that they can increase the access to quality oral healthcare in their countries or regions of origin.

LAOHA's uniqueness lies in the fact that it is Latin American and Neo-Latin-speaking countries oriented.

Leadership developing

LAOHA awards fellowships to dentistry graduates, foreign nationals or Brazilians. According to Bernal Stewart, one of the project mentors, “Latin America has excellent researchers and is a region where we hope to contribute to the improvement of the oral health of the population by developing new key opinion leaders. For this, being close to the universities and their researchers is crucial."

"Participating in the LAOHA has been a wonderful experience. I am having the opportunity to study in an internationally recognized dentistry program, such as the Doctorate Program of the Guarulhos University. In addition, I am working in different studies with a great human and scientific team. During the doctorate period, LAOHA has helped me in my personal and professional growth. Thank you very much LAOHA!"

History

LAOHA was conceived based, on one hand, to develop new regional leaders by sponsoring a PhD program in dentistry and, on the other hand, on the need to promote dental research in Latin America. It was envisioned and designed by researchers and executives, among them, Dr. Bernal Stewart (Associated Director of Colgate-Palmolive), Prof. Magda Feres (UNG), and Prof. Giuseppe Romito (USP).
